My Research and Planning posts begins at the very beginning of my blog.
My completed magazine is the last post on my blog

Research and Planning: Font styles
I've decided that i shall use Sans-serif fonts for my magazine contents and cover pages as this adds a more informal look to my magazine, helping it appeal to my age range. However, for my double page spread story, I'm going to use Serif fonts as they are easier to read in smaller sizes when compares to Sans-serif fonts.

Research and Planning: Price research
Due to my magazine being released every two weeks, I should look at official magazines' prices that are also released at the same frequency as mine.
Both NME and Kerrang are released at a similar time to mine and both range from £2.10 - £2.40, I think I should range my price within this range

Research and Planning: Possible Double Page Spread Usage
This double age spread sticks to a strict colour scheme of black, red and white holding the entire spread together. The use of images takes up round three quarters of the spread yet doesn't over power the page due to the use of black and white photography, the large title, the banner down the right hand side and the use of small fonts so that the quantity of text isn't lost.
This spread features an article on the band My Chemical Romance and how they are providing their musical entertainment to the best of their ability. I should consider an article for my double page spread.
I should use the strict colour scheme, banners and plenty of photographs to help give my double page spread a professional finish. I should also consider effects for my photographs such as black and white, sepia ect, and how I plan to use these effects to help keep my spread professional looking and well structured.
This spread once again uses a large text for the title which takes up a large amount of one of the pages. This double page spread uses the full photograph of Linkin Park as the main background for the text. I should keep in mind positioning on my photographs in order to fit text/banners in and around them in order to help add to the professional finish of my double page spread.
In conclusion I feel my double page spread should contain:
- A banner that may contain a slug line from the title or information relevant to the subject,
- Text which has a larger first letter and a small font set out in columns in order to give a professional finish,
- Photographs that take up a large amount of space, just under three quarters of the page, of the band together, with their family/people associated with them.
- Icon in the top left informing readers on what they're about to read e.g. News / Gigs.
- A strict 3 colour colour scheme.
- I should also note how exclusive my story is to my magazine in both the top left hand corner and also in my contents and cover.

Research and Planning: Head Shots
These are some test headshots for some potential models for my magazine.
These two models are ideal for my magazine as they are both male and also have a clothing preference that fits the criteria of my music magazine.
These two models would be suitable for my magazine. However, they wouldn't be suitable for my cover as my magazine has a more masculine look therefore these models would only be suitable for inside the magazine itself.

Research and Planning: Model Head shots

These are the two models that I plan to use for my front cover and double page spread. I decided to use these two models because they are both male, fit the age range of my target audience and fit the modern rock style.
I plan to use this model in my contents page for my short story. I chose this model as he is older than my target age range and therefore comes across as an older rock star, the way he looks fits the style that I want.
This is the model I chose for a feature on the front cover of my magazine because he fits the age range of my target audience and has a modern rock look to him so he fits in with my genre.
Research & Planning: Band Imagery
My front cover, contents page and double page spread needs to have a colour scheme and layout that suit the magazines genre.
Here are a few album covers and band photographs that fit both the genre and style of my magazine:
Here are a few album covers and band photographs that fit both the genre and style of my magazine:
This image has a strict colour scheme of red, black and a cream colour. This adds a vintage style to the cover, which I don't want, however I need to stick to a colour scheme also in order to make certain aspects of my magazine stand out.
This image of Nickelback has back lighting which adds shadows to the foreground however the faces of the band members are still visible. Also the use of a blue tinge over everything gives the photograph a supernatural feel adding to the Alternative Rock/Metal genre.
Research and Planning: Plan for the Week
This week I will:
- Start my music magazine
- Post head shots of potential models
- Produce at least one location recce & risk assessment
- Start writing double page spread story

Research & Planning: Mise-en-scene associated with my magazine
The mise-en-scene I would associate with my genre of magazine is:
- Musical instruments such as electric guitars and drum kits,
- Darker backgrounds, out of focus if a landscape
- Group of 3 figures in the foreground, which I plan to include in my magazine.
- A third dimension over the entire image .e.g. figures coming over masthead slightly or coming over title, which I plan to include in my magazine.
Research & Planning: SLR Practise
This image is too dark as it was taken from too far away so the flash didn't reach the subject of the photograph. I need to work on distancing myself from the subject so the flash reaches them.
This image is a brighter as I moved closer to the subject. However, it would have been better if i got the entire window in so that the image didn't look like it had two chunks cut out of it.
This image is both really bright and really clear, clearly photographing outside and using natural light is best for me. The photograph could have been better if I had included more of the subject in the photograph and less of the background.
This image is the best of the four as it is in focus and bright and is also well balanced with a decent amount of the background. The quality of focus and lighting in this image is much better than than the photographs I took for my college magazine due to the natural light.

Research and Planning: First Drafts of My Magazine
I plan to have a colour scheme of red, black and white as I feel this would give off a more masculine feel to my magazine and also helps to promote my genre of modern rock. I need to make sure that my masthead "RAGE" is the biggest thing on my front cover and features in all three of my pages in some way, shape or form.

This is my first ideas of what my magazine will look like. Ive decided to have two people on the front cover instead of three so that that cover didnt look too overcrowded. I've added a header and footer to show the extras involved with my magazine along with the large photo boxes at the bottom to link my cover stories with.

This is my contents page idea. I plan to have a band index down the left hand side to both balance the page and add a feature thats popular in other magazines. I'm going to have photographs in the centre of the page with a story about the person/people featured in them underneath. Both the story and photographs need to be in line with the contents banner and editors note that runs down the right hand side of the page in order to give it a professional feel. I've also added a subscribers advertisement to the bottom left of the page as it was another popular feature in the magazines I've looked at.

This is my first draft of my double page spread. I plan to take my main photograph of my two models and place it as a background for all of my text to go on so that my text isn't just on a plain background. I will also add photographs of my models down the side of the right hand page, next to my text, as I feel it will give a younger look to the page, appealing more to my target audience.
